The PATTERN Project: Innovating Road Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future

The PATTERN project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, represents a step forward in leveraging cutting-edge technologies to improve road infrastructure and promote sustainable transportation. Building on the results of the MARVEL project, PATTERN (Planning a Digital Twin for Greener Road Infrastructure) aims to develop a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that integrates various innovations to enhance urban mobility, promote sustainability, and optimise road operations. The project is not only a leap towards smarter urban planning but also a commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of transportation systems.

The kick-off meeting was held in May 2024, at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) in Crete. The project runs until May 2026 and consists of the following 6 partners from 4 different countries:

  1. Idryma Technologias Kai Erevnas (Greece)
  2. Greenroads Limited (Malta)
  3. Agency for Infrastructure Malta (Malta)
  4. Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Italy)
  5. AcrossLimits (Malta)
  6. Myrio d.o.o.za usluge (Croatia)

Key Technologies

At the core of the PATTERN project are several cutting-edge technologies designed to improve how we manage roads:

MARVdash: Developed by FORTH, this user-friendly dashboard streamlines the management of services, allowing experts to efficiently control platform resources.

CATflow: Created by GRN, this data pipeline uses AI to process audiovisual data from cameras, generating anonymised statistics that help prioritise active mobility and improve city efficiency.

Anonymisation Software: FBK’s innovative algorithms anonymise video data, ensuring privacy while enabling traffic analysis.

Goals and Strategy

The goal of PATTERN is to evolve these innovations into a SaaS platform, planning a large-scale pilot project in Malta. This pilot will serve as a model for similar projects across Europe, aiming to address the current transportation challenges and anticipate future needs.

Collaboration and Outreach

The success of the PATTERN project depends on the collaboration between research institutions, government agencies, and industry experts. We are dedicated to making our findings and developments accessible through our project website, newsletters, and social media channels. This approach ensures that a broad audience stays informed and engaged with our progress.

PATTERN’s strategy revolves around three pillars:

  1. Incorporation: Integrate Horizon 2020 innovations into a cohesive SaaS platform, addressing licensing and technical challenges to create a commercially viable product
  2. Execution: Develop and implement a strategy to promote the SaaS platform across Europe, starting with a pilot in Malta and expanding to Greece and Croatia. This includes hosting workshops and business development activities to stimulate interest and adoption
  3. Development: Focus on securing funding for large-scale pilot projects through proposals for ERDF, INTERREG, or similar schemes. These pilots will demonstrate the platform’s potential to enhance road infrastructure efficiency and safety while reducing environmental impact.

The first project workshop was held recently and served as an introduction to Intellectual Property (IP). This initial session was crucial in laying the groundwork for understanding how to manage and protect the innovative solutions being developed. It marked the beginning of workshops aimed at ensuring all stakeholders are equipped to navigate the complexities of IP in the context of the project.

The PATTERN project aims to set new standards in road infrastructure management, facilitating advancements in efficiency, sustainability, and innovation.

Follow our journey and stay updated on our progress as we work towards creating a smarter, more connected transportation network.
